Moon Books Giveaway: A Pagan Testament

by Brendan Myer

Pagans often claim that their spiritual inspiration comes not from a written scripture but from personal experience and original creativity. Yet there are many written works which also constitute its testament. Some of them are thousands of years old, such as the Descent of Ishtar, and The Homeric Hymn to Demeter. Others are more recent, such as The Charge of the Goddess. “A Pagan Testament” collects these original works together, along with the poetry and prose that inspired the founders of the modern Pagan movement. It also includes the largest collection of circle songs and wisdom teachings ever published, which are the Pagan equivalent of the Biblical Psalms and Proverbs. They were collected by the author in a survey of Pagan folklore, from almost 2,000 people in twelve countries around the world. They show that Paganism is continually expanding and developing. Finally, the book includes an original and valuable philosophical commentary and interpretation.

A remarkable resource for anyone following the Wicca-Pagan path. We highly recommend it. Janet Farrar and Gavin Bone, authors of “A Witches Bible” and other titles

Brendan Myers is one of the most important Neopagan voices now alive. Isaac Bonewits, author of “Real Magic” and founder of Arn Draoicht Fein

Brendan Myers was inspired by Celtic culture, taught to him by his Irish parents. He has a Ph.D in ethics and philosophy and contributes regularly to Pagan and general media. He lives in Canada.

The books that inspire me have been “Paganism: A Guide to Earth-Centered Religions.” I enjoy “Pagans & Christians: The Personal Spiritual Experience.” Most of the other books I enjoy are histories of the pagans in Scotland and Ireland.

Sounds like this was certainly an ambitious project!
My personal spiritual path has been shaped by Drawing Down the Moon; Maiden, Mother, and Crone; The Magickal Year; After the Ecstacy, the Laundry; and other authors such as Dyer and Myss.

The book that most influenced my spiritual evolution would have to be, the Motherpeace tarot cards by Vicki Noble and Karen Vogel.
This book turned ‘traditional’ meanings for the cards on its head by deconstructing the patriarchal propaganda within each one. The cards being circles rather than rectangles was by itself revolutionary.
I think my spiritual path would’ve looked quite4 different in I hadn’t come across this one in the ’80′s.

The Eddas and Goddess Holle (Gardenstone) are two works which have greatly influenced me.

Countless works have influenced me as a Wiccan, so there is no way I could list them all. However, a few noteworthy titles which come to mind are “Drawing Down the Moon” by Margot Adler, “Goth Craft” by Raven Digitalis, “The Shadow Magick Compendium” by Raven Digitalis”, “Wicca for One” by Ray Buckland, “Living Wiccan” by Scott Cunningham, and “Solitary Witch” by Silver Ravenwolf (just to name a few ^_- ).

*I also liked the Moon Books page on FB.

There have been countless books that have inspired me. Among them would be “Buckland’s Complete Book of Witchcraft” by Raymond Buckland, “Living Wicca” by Scott Cunningham and the Mabinogion.
